UCLAN: 7th March 2019

I enjoyed working today with colleagues from UCLAN School of Medicine and Dentistry again, this time on reinventing assessment. The main slides we used are here, including a link to a very convincing MOOC interview with Royce Sadler, adding a great deal to many of the things we were thinking about.  UCLAN-2019-3-w.pptx (605 downloads)
Thanks to getting a lift to the station, I got an earlier (comfortable) Glasgow train, and had 50 minutes at Carlisle where I enjoyed a bite of lunch, before getting the Newcastle train.

ANTF Writing Retreat: Cumberland Lodge: 17-18th January 2018

Sally and I had a great time working with a group of colleagues at the magnificent venue of Cumberland Lodge on 17th-18th January, on various writing projects they were involved in. We ran various sessions (we did not charge for these), but the main point was allowing colleagues to get on with their writing – and the feedback shows that they did indeed succeed with this. We took a selection of slides with us to support the sessions we ran, and all of these slides are here (but we only used some of them):  Cumberland-lodge-writing-residential-17-18-january-2019-W.pptx (563 downloads)

QMUL: 16th January 2019

Here are the main slides I used in our workshop today on Assessment and Feedback. Thanks for many great questions, and participating well in all the activities.  QMUL-Jan-19-ww.pptx (634 downloads)
Here also are one or two of the other downloads I mentioned in passing:  Phil-Race-THE-article-on-assessed-essays-Sept-18.docx (817 downloads)   Robert-Nelson-THE-learning-outcomes-piece.docx (905 downloads)   ukpsf-details-on-one-sheet-w.docx (786 downloads)

Cork Institute of Technology: 8th-9th January

Happy New Year to everyone.
Sally and I have had a great time at CIT these two days, along with Michelle Morgan and Kay Sambell, where we’ve run sessions on everything from student engagement, assessment and feedback, and HEA Fellowships. We’ve been made most welcome by everyone, and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and hope to be back soon. The slides and handout from my little session on ‘Looking After Yourself’ are here, and the products of the post-it exercise we did together.

The first ten of the TACIT Quick Guides on various aspects of assessment and feedback, were launched at the event, written by Sally Brown, Kay Sambell and me, with more planned for later in 2019.

Season’s Greetings to all – and holiday reading?

I’m in and around Newcastle for the festive season, enjoying family events and friends.

University of Derby: 12th December

Great working with so many of you at Derby University today, and linking current thinking in best practice regarding assessment and feedback to your excellent Strategy there. Well done for having Gold in the TEF – I can see that this is well deserved, and wish you success in the next round. I hope you didn’t mind me challenging some traditional assessment and feedback processes, or hurrying you through some exercises on feedback which you may wish to revisit in a leisurely manner in your own contexts. Thanks for all the Tweets. Well done to the participant who found my typo and won £1, (which I’ve now corrected). The main slides I used are here:  Derby-2018-w.pptx (623 downloads)

UCLAN: 6th December 2018

I really enjoyed working with you  today on ‘Making Feedback Effective’. In particular, thanks for rating the six feedback processes I set you out of 10, and adding up scores for each, in various stages considering four factors affecting their implementation. I am looking forward to studying the results post-its, and continuing to develop these ideas. Thanks too to the participant who won £1 by identifying a typo on one of the slides! But no Tweets today? Was it something I said?
I look forward to working with you again in March next year, when we’ll turn out attention to ‘Re-inventing Assessment’. Meanwhile, the slides from today’s session are here:  UCLAN-2018-2-w.pptx (870 downloads) .
Finally, may I wish you all rest, peace and joy during the next few weeks.
